Profile of Khwendo Kor Working Areas:

A. Districts Upper & Lower Dir:
District Dir is located in the north of NWFP sharing a long border with Afghanistan. Dir has been the mainstay of all major religious extremists uprising in Pakistan so considers as the most sensitive area in Pakistan in terms of religious extremism. District Dir is a very fertile area in terms of forest, fruits and agriculture. Cultivable area is 8379 hectare. Major crops are sugarcane, maize, wheat, gram and rice.

Population is 1368000 persons over an area of 5282 Sq Km.

Literacy rate for male is 54.65 % and for female is 14.38 %. Literacy rate in Urban area is 41 % and rural area is 21.92 %. There are 1140 Primary Schools, 95 Middle Schools, 70 High/Higher Secondary Schools and 3 colleges.

In health sectors there are 3 Hospitals, 33 Dispensaries, 6 RHCs, 62 BHUs and 4 MCH Centers. There are 192 doctors and population per doctor is 3153 persons.

Communication channels like Telephone, televisions and post offices along with electricity facilities is available in the Urban area while in the far flung areas people are deprived of electricity, roads and telephone facilities1.

KK is implementing female education, primary health care, and social organization programmes in both the districts.

 

 

B. FR Bannu:

The population of FR Bannu is comprised mostly of Wazir tribe, ferocious and indominatable tribe lies to the south west of the NWFP bordering with Afghanistan. Cultivable area is 74733 hectares. Major crop is sugar cane with a yield of 39985 Kgs per hectare. Other crops are maize, rice, wheat and gram.

The population of FR Bannu is 21290 persons spread over an area of 877 Sq Km.

Literacy rate for male is 17.25% and female is 0.64. There are 256 Primary Schools, 20 Middle Schools and 13 Higher Schools.

There are only 3 hospitals, 18 dispensaries and 11 BHUs. There are 4946 patients per doctor. The dispensaries lack adequate stock of life saving drugs while BHUs require the sanctioning of doctor’s posts. The remaining BHUs with sanctioned posts for doctors are filled by only a small percentage of such positions. The BHU has also a sanctioned post for one LHV (Lady Health Visitor) however only one LHV’s post is filled in the entire project area.

Communication channels like telephone, television and post offices are available to the people. Electricity is available to almost all of the population. The roads are comparatively in better conditions but in interior are worst.

KK started its activities in February 2003 in social mobilization and education.

 


   
 

C. District Karak:

District Karak is one of the remote areas in the South of North West Frontier Province (NWFP), situated on the Indus Highway, with barren lands, arid zone and scarcity of water. People of the area are deprived of most basic necessities of life i.e. water, health and education. Total cultivated area is 75778 hectares. Major crop is maize while rice, gram and wheat are also cultivate in the area

Total population of Karak is 457000 persons over an area of 3372 SqKm. People are reluctant to the process of development because of cultural constraints, religion and adherence to strict cultural ethics.

Literacy rate in Urban Karak is 59 % and Rural Karak is 47.77 %. Ratio of literacy of male: female is 77.12: 22.04. There are 723 Primary, 51 Middle, High/Higher Secondary 63 and 5 colleges.
There are 93 doctors. Persons per doctor are 4913approximately. There are 5 Hospitals, 3 Dispensaries, 5 Rural Health Centers (RHCs), 20 Basic Health Centers (BHUs) and 2 Mother & Child Care Center (MCHCs).

KK intervened in District Karak in 1994 with Integrated Basic Education (IBE) then in 1996 KK started its work in the region on Women Micro-Enterprise Development (WMED), Primary Health Care (PHC) and Education. Under WMED credit is extended to poor women for supporting the self-employment to promote small-scale enterprises with in the four walls of the house.


 

D. District Peshawar :

Peshawar is the provincial capital of the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) derives its name from a Sanskrit word “Pushpapura” meaning city of flowers. Peshawar district is extending over 50 km from north to south and over 30 km from east west. Cultivable area is 74287 hectares. Major crops are maize, rice and sugarcane. Peshawar is spread over an area of 1, 257 Sq Km with a population of 2115000 persons.

Literacy rate of females is 27.22 and male is 59.06. In Urban area literacy rate is 56.21 and in rural area is 32.17. There are 1024 Primary Schools, 124 Middle Schools, 106 High/Higher Secondary Schools and 6 Colleges. In health sector there exists 24 Hospitals, 67 Dispensaries

, RHCs, 55 BHUs and 19 MCH Centers. Total government Doctors are 1314. Population per doctor is 1638.

Most of the roads are metallic while in the rural areas few of the road are of low type. Communication channels like telephone, televisions, and post office facilities are available to almost all of the population. Electricity is also available to all areas. KK has intervened in Peshawar with the Micro Enterprise. KK is also implementing the Female Education and Primary Health Care (PHC) programmes

 

E. District Abbotabad

Abbottabad is the principal city of the Abbotabad District in the NWFP province of Pakistan. It is 4120 feet (1256 m) above sea levell, and is located 63 miles (101 km) from Rawalpindi, and is undoubtedly one of the cleanest, the most beautiful cities of Pakistan. The city is much like a valley with scenic beauty and beautiful romantic weather at its peak. The city is also called "The City of Pines".

In 1998 the population of Abbottabad District was 881,000. According to the 1998 census, over 94% of population speak Hindko as a first language, but Urdu and English are also spoken & understood by about 75% of the residents.

Abbottabad was a city of British India, the headquarters of Hazara Division (then a district), and named after its founder, Major James Abbott. Abbott settled this district in 1853 after the annexation of the Punjab, and became its first Deputy Commissioner. It was an important military cantonment and sanatorium, being the headquarters of a brigade in the second division of the northern army corps.
